As of 1 October 2008 a low emission zone (Umweltzone) has come into force for the city of Frankfurt. This zone can only be accessed by vehicles belonging to Pollutant Groups 2 to 4 and bearing the relevant pollution badge. Pollution badges for vehicles from Germany and abroad indicating the relevant Pollutant Group can be ordered at TÜV SÜD.

Driving a vehicle into a low emission zone without one of these badges constitutes an offence and can lead to a fine.

Obtaining environmental badges
When the new Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone) comes into force on 1 October, the range of services provided by TÜV Hessen in Frankfurt (http.//www.tuev-hessen.de/standortPage.tuv) will be extended. This means that the TÜV Service Center in Frankfurt Rebstock (address: Am Römerhof 15) will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays as of 4 October. An additional service will also be provided for six months enabling environmental badges to be obtained on Sundays between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This restriction for vehicles will be introduced on a gradual basis.
